Amazing Ideas for Inspiring Writing

I’ve long been an admirer of Tom Barrett’s fantastic ‘Interesting Ways‘ presentations, and it’s great to see so many people contributing to these resources, sharing ways of using a range of tools in the classroom. I’ve even been invited to add my own ideas to some of those presentations, but I haven’t got round to it yet – sorry Tom!

Anyway, I’ve decided to have a go at making my own. However, I’ve decided to focus on one particular aspect of work in school (i.e. writing), and think of ways to inspire that in our classrooms. At the time of typing this, the presentation is small with only five twelve ideas, but as times goes by, I’ll be adding new suggestions, and maybe others will be inspired to add their own too.

There are lots of wonderful writing resources on the Internet… many of which I’ve only discovered through my delicious network or Twitter friends. I know that there are a lot of teachers out there who don’t (yet!) use such networking tools, so I wanted to try and gather some of these resources together for others to access more easily. I’m also very lucky because my ‘Teaching Ideas‘ site receives lots of visitors, so I’ll be publishing this on there, so that others can benefit from the ideas too.

Maybe this will be the start of a new set of ‘Amazing Ideas…’ presentations? Or maybe I need to concentrate on adding more to this one first!

If you would like to contribute, please feel free to email me, or contact me via Twitter.

Update – This document can now be found, along with lots of other collaborative presentations, on www.ideastoinspire.co.uk – more information is in this post.

Great Slide show. I can’t access your email and too long for a tweet. I really must find out about Myst. I ‘ll make it my challenge to do that after the holiday!
Ideas to stimulate writing: setting up an alien spaceship crash on the playground, guarded by community police officers if possible. Investigating and writing the report.
Using trailers to write a review of the film
Objects and paintings in galleries can often provide a story
Photographs of you when younger or at a family event for digital storytelling
superhero toys that can have their own adventures around the classroom
A piece of music can often tell a whole story or stimulate poetry writing
    I’ll stop there!

Wow – loads of ideas – thanks! I’ll add some of these to the presentation later.

I’ve also just discovered your blog for the first time – you have some great content there. I’ll add a link on ‘Teaching Ideas’ if you don’t mind!

Thanks Mark for such great ideas. I’ve been planning to use The Piano for a while & you’ve given me some extra ideas. I love the Telescopic text idea too!I can see that this is going to be like Tom’s ‘Interesting Ways’ & will just keep growing!

Thank you for all the ideas. I also love Tom Barrett’s presentations, but I rank this right up there with them! Thank you for putting it together.
