ICT Survey
A few days ago, I read a really interesting blog post by David Mitchell, which you can view here. To summarise, David had carried a quick survey of his Year 6 class to find out about their use of ICT at home and asked the following questions:
- Put up your hand if you have a computer connected to the internet at your house?
- Put up your hand if you use the computer every day?
- How often do you use the computer each day? (1-30 mins, 31-60mins, 1-2hours, 2-4hours, or more than 4 hours)
- Put up your hand if you use either Facebook, MSN, Bebo or Twitter?
- Put up your hand if your parents help you set up the account?
- Put up your hand if you have a computer in your bedroom?
- Put up your hand if you have a computer in your bedroom does it have a webcam?
- Put up your hand if your parents check you internet history?
- Put up your hand if you know how to delete you internet history?
- Put up your hand if you have MSN buddies?
- Put up your hand if you have any MSN buddies you have never met face to face?
- Put up your hand if you have you ever seen anything on the internet you know you shouldn’t have?
The results from David’s class were really interesting and we had a brief discussion via Twitter about trying out the survey with other classes to compare results. With David’s permission, I have set up his questions as a Google Form.
Can you help? If you are able to take part in the survey, we would really appreciate it if you could:
- carry out the survey with your class,
- enter the overall results on to the Google form at bit.ly/ict-survey

The survey is completely anonymous and there is no need to enter any personal information which could identify you or your class. The data will be kept on a Google spreadsheet which is publicly accessible at bit.ly/ict-survey-results.
About the results… There are two ’sheets’ on the Google spreadsheet. The first shows the data that has been entered for the questions. The ‘percentages’ sheet shows this data as a percentage of each class, i.e. what percentage of each class answered each particular question.
There is also a pink row on the percentages sheet which shows averages for each question. Please be aware that these are not always 100% up to date, as I have to alter the formula every time that someone completes the form. If someone knows how to do this automatically, I would love to hear from you!
If you would like to use the data for your own e-safety work in schools (e.g. presentations to parents), feel free. I hope that you are able to carry out the survey… we’re looking forward to seeing any more results that are added. Thank you.
